Peel and stick vinyl wallpaper, made for rented walls
The Vinyl Wallpaper Sticker is the finish we recommend when the wall is not yours to keep. The adhesive is built in, so there is no paste and no mess, it repositions while you are working, and it peels away later without residue. It is the usual choice for our renting customers in Bangkok condos.
What it is
A peel-and-stick wallcovering printed to your wall's exact width and height in centimetres. Because there is no paste, hanging it needs nothing but clean hands, a squeegee and patience, and a panel that has gone on crooked can be lifted and laid again while you work. Taking it down is the same in reverse: pull slowly from a top corner at a shallow angle rather than straight out.
What the wall has to be
Smooth, sound and fully cured. Two things decide whether it comes off as cleanly as it went on, and neither of them is the mural: the paint underneath has to be sound rather than flaking, and it has to have had time to cure, because paint applied recently can lift with the mural when you remove it. Anything strongly textured will show through and will stop the adhesive gripping. Existing wallpaper comes off first. If you rent, it is always worth getting your landlord's permission in writing before you start.
Where we would not use it
Humid rooms and unconditioned rooms. Air conditioning that cycles on and off creates condensation, and condensation is what works at a self-adhesive edge over months. For a bathroom, or a room with no air conditioning at all, premium vinyl or fabric backed will hold up better. The paste-up finishes also simply last longer, so if the wall is yours and you expect the mural to stay, they are the better buy.
Living with it
Dust with a dry cloth and take marks off with a damp one and a little mild soap. Nothing abrasive, no scouring pads, no solvent cleaners. It will look right for years on a sound, dry, well-prepared wall, though not as long as the paste-up finishes will. Where a removal goes wrong it is almost always the paint underneath rather than the mural, which is why the cured-paint rule above matters more than anything else on this page.
